An Announcement and a Reminder

Posted by lucyd     Category: About LucyD, Contest Winners, Interview, tarot

Ok, first the announcement:

I did draw a Winner’s name for the FREE January Tarot Reading.  I did set up the appointment, and I showed up to read the cards.  For reasons unknown to me, however, the Winner did not attend.  January was a very busy month for me and I didn’t make the selection for the free reading until late in the month — and now January is almost over.

SO

I’ll draw two names for February.  Please do watch your inbox! The subject line of your email (should be be chosen) will say: “NOT SPAM! You Won a Free Tarot Reading at OnlyTarot.net” and it will include instructions on how to claim your reading.

REMINDER:

SUNDAY February 1, I’ll be the guest on Tarot Talk Radio, so please feel free to tune in at 1pm Eastern for my conversation with Raven and Free Readings in the second half of the show!!

If you miss it, you can always listen to the archive on the same page.  I really hope to see you all there — besides the interview, there’s a call-in, there’s also a chat, so lots of ways to say “HI.”

C’mon down and see how nervous I can get!!

The Interview Tables Have Turned! (Yikes!)

Interviewing people is my secret passion! I love to put on my everywoman clothes and ask the burning questions that we all have to the people who know the answers — and then share my findings with the world.

A long, long time ago I interviewed many of the heads of the world’s religions at a wonderful gathering in Chicago called “The Parliament of the World’s Religions”.  You see, 100 years before that gathering, Chicago hosted the World’s Fair.  The most attended event at that fair was the Parliament.  It was the first time that many people have ever been exposed to Eastern, Asian and African ways of worship, and the stories of how the participants arrived from the far-flung corners of the earth is a story inside a story.

In a completely unexpected fluke of the stars, I — a single mother with four children and no real job — wound up at the centennial anniversary of that event for 4 days, interviewing some of the most prominent religious icons of our time for a documentary.  I left the experience completely changed.

But now — now that’s all in the past.  I have been invited to a show on Blog Talk Radio to be the interviewee!! The show is “Tarot Talk” and is hosted by a really wonderful woman I met on Twitter named Raven.

So — the date for my interview is next Sunday, February 1, and the time is Noon, Central time. There is a chat room that is open during the show, plus you can call in.  We’re even doing mini-readings in the second half of the show.  So drop in and give me some moral support…..my knees are already shaking!!

The Fairy Tale Tarot

Posted by lucyd     Category: Card Art

Whether you read Tarot cards or have just riffled through a deck to admire the art, chances are the thought has crossed your mind: “I wonder what it takes to create a Tarot deck?”

Of course, knowledge of the basic cards and their meanings is required — the more in-depth your knowledge is, the more creative you can get.  But still, most Tarot deck creators stick close to the benchmark deck, The Rider-Waite Tarot for guidance.

Every so often you’ll encounter an artist/Tarot-lover who will put a new spin on the ideas behind the images — the actual engine of the Tarot — and their meanings.  Sometimes those associations are so obscure that a reader can have a lot of difficulty making the connections.

But sometimes, a deck is an inspiration to those who use it — and there is a new deck in production now that I’d like to tell you about: The Fairy Tale Tarot, scheduled to appear in the fall of 2009.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

The artist who created it is Lisa Hunt, and the link above takes you to the deck’s website, but not to its homepage — instead I’ve linked you to the gallery so you can see even moreso how the images were conceptualized, including photos of real people on whose poses the cards were based.

But for me, the most important quality of this deck is that the cards are all based on fary tales from around the world.  This is what brings the depth to the cards.  When you look at the Tower card in most every other Tarot deck, you will find the message that all your ideas, plans and things put into motion are on notice — if not already crumbling, to make way for the new.

In The Fairy Tale Tarot, the Tower card is the Emperor’s New Clothes.  It’s perfection! When the emperor walks out of his caslte to have his subjects admire his new clothes, his folly (among other things!) is exposed and his credibility crumbles.  Time to make way for the new!

There are many familiar fairy tales depicted, and some that are not so familiar.  I was pleased to see The Snow Queen represented, because it’s one of my favorites, and there is a really deep story in that fable. There are also stories from other cultures and countries that you may not know.

Think about it — if you know the story, you cue into the deepest meanings of the card used to represent it.   That can bring a depth to a reading that memorizing a book full of card-meanings can never do.

And it’s fun!  Remembering the stories from your childhood, and learning some new ones, too.  The universal tales of man are told in every corner of every country on earth….sometimes in fairy tales, sometimes in myth, and sometimes with the tarot.

If you’re thinking you’d like to give Tarot reading a try, this deck might be the right place to start.  After all, the stories in fairy tales and the stories in the Tarot are the stories of mankind.  You’re already way ahead of the curve!
